Insanities of English

It's a daunting task teaching English and English vocabulary and all.I'll try to explain why with the help of this 'Forward' from a friend.

We'll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes;
but the plural of ox became oxen not oxes.
One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,
yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice;
yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.
If the plural of man is always called men,
why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen?
If I spoke of my foot and show you my feet,
and I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?
If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,
why shouldn't the plural of booth be called beeth?
Then one may be that, and three would be those,
yet hat in the plural would never be hose,
and the plural of cat is cats, not cose.
We speak of a brother and also of brethren,
but though we say mother, we never say methren.
Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
but imagine the feminine, she, shis and shim?

Some reasons to be grateful if you grew up speaking English
1) The bandage was wound around the wound.
2) The farm was used to produce produce.
3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.
4) We must polish the Polish furniture.
5) He could lead if he would get the lead out.
6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.
7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was

time to present the present.
8) At the Army base, a bass was painted on the head of a bass drum.
9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.
10) I did not object to the object.
11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid.
12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.
13) They were too close to the door to close it.
14) The buck does funny things when the does are present.
15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.
16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.
17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail.
18) After a number of Novocain injections, my jaw got number.
19) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.
20) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.
21) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?
22) I spent last evening evening out a pile of dirt.

Screwy pronunciations can mess up your mind!
For example... If you have a rough cough, climbing can be tough when
going through the bough on a tree!
Let's face it - English is a crazy language.
There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; and neither apple or
pine in pineapple.
English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France.
Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted, but if we explore its paradoxes, we find
that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is
neither from Guinea, nor is it a pig.
And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't
groce and hammers don't ham?
Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend?
If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of
them, what do you call it?
If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught?
If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

Sometimes I think all the folks who grew up speaking English should be
committed to an asylum for the verbally insane.
In what other language do people recite at a play and play at a
recital?
Ship by truck and send cargo by ship?
Have noses that run and feet that smell?
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man
and a wiseguy are opposites?
You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your
house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it
out and in which an alarm goes off by going on.

I tell you once again, the English language is insane.Double English is worse than Double Dutch! But, I love it for better or worse!!!

Spoken English

When I started Spoken English classes for students and housewives and everybody else two years ago I had mixed feelings and was a little nervous. It made me remember the movie My Fair Lady

Unlike Prof.Higgins[Rex Harrison] I may not be able to wax eloquence of ''the majesty and grandeur of the English Language'' to the Eliza Dolittles[Audrey Hepburn]of Virudhs but I do hope I will be able to get them to say it right-The rain in Spain stays mainly on the plains or

In Hertford,Hereford,Hampshire hurricanes hardly ever happen !!!!

Cousins

"A cousin is a little bit of childhood that can never be lost."

Cousins come in all shapes and sizes. "Cousins are different beautiful flowers in the same garden."

Twentyfive years ago on this day one such beautiful flower, my cousin Shyama, was plucked away from the garden of this world. As I recall memories of her and some of the good times we shared, I am also reminded of some of my other cousins who are no more.In memory of them I dedicate this

IN MEMORY OF MY MEMORABLE COUSINS

SHYAMA was my docile cousin.
Just when she was beginning to bloom
After reaching the peak of win,
She was plucked away, leaving us all in gloom.

If ever there was a popular cousin pair
It was PAWRNA [PRIYA] and THIAGARAJAN.
Ever smiling and generous-were gems, truly rare.
Their departure was like the setting of the sun.

I am filled with remorse
At the end of DHANUSHKODI,
With toddler DIVYA, to make the tragedy worse.
Such sorrow shouldn’t befall anybody.

A joie de vivre was PAVALAM.
A handsome groom we wanted to see
But instead, left us to feel glum;
With dreams unfulfilled and not to be.

MOHAN-the family’s chemical engineer
Was gushy about stuff like meditation.
He arrived on Xmas and departed on Tamil New Year
Leaving us in a state of desolation.

KANNAN or Kannappa as he was fondly called
Brings to mind myriads of memories.
He often had us with laughter filled.
But now, sadly, just fills us with memories.

Cousins like Shyama and Pawrna were to me "Cousins from the beginning, friends till the end!" The fragrance of these flowers still linger in my memory.

St.Patrick's Day

With two brothers who were in St.Patrick's House during their school days and a son who went to a Catholic school run by the Patrician Brothers,it's easy for me to remember that 17 March is St.Patrick's Day.However, only a few days back came to know that St Patrick is not only the patron saint of Ireland but also the patron saint of engineers. So ,all the more reason to wish my son and brothers with this Irish prayer

May green be the grass you walk on,
May blue be the skies above you,
May pure be the joys that surround you,
May true be the hearts that love you.
May your home be bright with cheer,
May your cares all disappear,
May contentment come your way,
And may laughter fill your day.

Happy St.Patrick's Day!

Careless Listener

This is just in case anyone read a previous blof of mine, posted a few days back,in which I said my siter-in-law offered her hair at St.Antony's church in Vembar. It was her 2 year old grand daughter who had her head shaved at that little church on the beach in Vembar. My apologies for my mistake.

REGRETS OF A CARELESS LISTENER

When God gave out brains,

I thought He said trains,

And I missed mine.

When God gave out looks,

I thought He said books,

And I didn't want any.

When God gave out noses,

I thought He said roses,

And I ordered a red one.

When God gave out legs,

I thought He said kegs,

So I ordered two fat ones.

When God gave out ears,

I thought He said beers,

So I ordered two long ones.

When God gave out chins,

I thought He said gins,

So I said, "Give me a double."

When God gave out heads
I thought He said beds
And I asked for a soft one.

Dad

Dad By Family Friend Poems

This is product of our society that believes that it is not macho to show emotions. Fathers may have been shamed into repressing their emotions and may pass this on to their children. On the other hand a father who can show his children that a real man is one who shows emotion is a great gift to his children. A father plays a huge role in his children's development. Hopefully, he will live up to the challenge of being the best Dad that he can be.

It does not take a special day
to bring you to our minds,
For the days without a thought of you
are very hard to find

In Memory of Daddy

One gift, above all others
God gives to us to treasure
One that knows no time, no place
And one gold cannot measure

The precious, poignant tender gift
Of Memory......that will keep
On dear ones ever in our hearts
Although God gives them sleep

It brings back long remembered things
A song, a word, a smile
And the world's a better place ... because
We had them for awhile!

~Author Unknown~

We have to thank God for the blessing called Memory to remember Daddy still. His death Anniversary-the 5th one-is tomorrow

Sons

A girl has strengths that no one will know...How she can handle trouble and carry heavy burdens. She holds happiness, love and opinions..She smiles when she feels like screaming, sings when she feels like crying. Cries when she's happy and laughs when she's afraid..Her love is unconditional! There's only one thing wrong with her that she sometimes forgets what her worth is...We love you ,mum!Happy Women's Day!

Well, that was the message I got from my younger son on behalf of his bro and himself to wish me .Very touching![I must admit I was flattered too!!]

A son is. . .

a dream-builder,

a joy-bringer,

a memory-maker.

A son is love.

And,I'm terribly fortunate to have two sons! That's my thumbs up sign to celebrate womanhood on Women's Day!!!

International Women's Day

Tomorrow is International Women's Day. To me,the two women who mean the most to me are my Mummy and Akka[my elder sis]. My sister doesn't stop to amaze me. Now she's part of The Team in Training of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. She will be doing the Yosemite hike in June-all just to help to raise funds for a good cause-to help to find a cure for blood cancers.I wish her well in her mission. May she and her team find gratification and satisfaction in what they have set out to accomplish.
Happy Women's Day to a special woman in my family who spreads much happiness around!

Acrostic -Boomi Pooja

Writing an acrostic for someone in the family is fun.Last year on this date my bro  had a ceremony[called Boomi Pooja in Tamil] for laying the foundation stone for his new house. This is the prayer I wrote to wish him and his family ,in an acrostic form.

Blessings we seek
Oh, dear Lord.
Obeisance we offer.
Meekly we ask for an
Ideal and cosy home.

Prayers we murmur aplenty-
Obstacles all may be removed,
Opulence may blend with modesty.
Jubilantly may he soon nestle in
A haven called HOME SWEET HOME!!!

Churches in Vembar

Strange that just a day after I was reminded of Vembar, my sister-in-law phoned to say she was going to tonsure her head-offer her hair to God-at St.Antony's church in Vembar. I have a vague memory of that being a small little shrine on the beach. But,it seems that was washed away in the tsunami a few years back and another one has been built nearby.
My mummy and daddy were very secular.Though Vembar housed our family's ancestral temple of worship, they also took us to a church which is in the town.If my memory is right, I think it was called Holy Spirit Church.

A Night in Vembar

When my tuition student told me that she had been to Vembar to her maternal grandparents' family temple during the weekend, I was engulfed with nostalgia. To me-Vembar means Fun,Frolic and Food! Also,Sun,Sea and Sand!!The nostalgia made me pull down an old scrap book of mine with a poem written by me in 1979 of good old Vembar. Here goes.....(hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it!)
 VEMBAR

The buses merrily horn in
And with a gay din
People excitedly clamber out
Feeling very devout
Seeing their family deity
Amidst all the gaiety.

The aura of tranquility
In this little beach city
Called Vembar, a noun
Among the Coralites most renown,
Is invaded upon
Even before the crack of dawn.

There are mad scrambles
Amidst the brambles
For the best cabins
To spend in like carefree urchins
Three bright summery days
In many lovely ways.

Suddenly the temple bells
Stop pealing, like broken spells.
Serenity is temporarily regained
Making seem the previous din feigned.
The queen of the night smiles proudly,
Amidst her twinkling courtiers, majestically.

The whole camp is asleep
But I stay awake like a lighthouse beep,
Feeling conscious of the light cool breeze
Playing on me like a gentle tease.
And, romantic me hears the roars
Of the wild sea beating upon a smuggler’s oars.

In rhythm the palm trees sway
Like a lively dancing fay.
Through the thorns and palm leaves
The bright moonlight in its splendour cleaves.
And I see in clarity nature’s dearness
Even in the remoteness and wilderness.

And then most gradually
I drift into a sleep, reluctantly;
To dream about the morrow
To spend sans any sorrow-
Frolicking, sea bathing and sunbathing,
And of course, sans dout, PRAYING!!!

Though ,over the years, my interest in going to Vembar has waned, memories of the good times I had there with my family and cousins still linger, with a tinge of excitement!

Reminiscing about Vembar reminds me of the hit song of the 1970s We had joy,we had fun we had seasons in the sun"!!!
